WELCOMETOGROAMHOUSEMUSEUMThedownstairsexhibitiontoyourleftfocusesonthePictsofRosemarkie.Fromthe700sADonwards,thecentreforChristianityfortheInnerMorayFirthwasinthisarea.Upstairsisoursummerexhibition-“OneMan’sWar”-GeorgeBainintheBalkans1917-1918,featuringwatercolours,drypointetchingandlinoprintsofpeopleandlandcapesfromtheBalkansatthattime.Alsointhemuseumisourshop,whichincludesawell-selectedrangeofgiftsandcraftsatarangeofprices,andawiderangeofbooksonthePicts,ScottishhistoryandCelticart.Weareanindependentmuseum,staffedbyvolunteers,anddependentondonationsandsalestokeepgoing.Pleasesupportus.

LANDSCAPESOFTHEBALKANFRONTBain’slandscapepaintingsshowthetoughterrainoftheBalkanFront.Themarshes,mountainsandravinesforcedtheopposingarmiestoastalemateinearly1917.TheBulgarianarmyhadcreatedstrongmilitarypositionsinthemountainsalongtheBulgarian,SerbianandMacedonian(Greek)borderaftercapturingSerbiain1915.TheirnextaimwastotakeMacedonia,whichhadalargeBulgarianpopulation.TheBritish,French,Italian,RussianandSerbianarmiesbuilttrenchesandcampsinthegulliesandravinesofthefoothillstoopposethem.Thecoldmountainwintersmadefrostbitecommon.Incontrast,inthehotsummersthemountaincampsbecamesemidesert.Troopswhohadmovedawayfromthefrontlinetothebattalionreserveonthemarshyplainscaughtmalaria.PerhapsitwasbecauseofthishardshipthatBainpaintedfewmilitaryscenes,preferringthelandscapeitselfandthechangingskies.

THEBALKANSINMICROCOSMBainwasfascinatedbythepeoplehemetintheBalkans.Hisincrediblydetailedportraitsshowawayoflifebasedonsubsistencefarming.AlthougheverythinglookspeacefulinBain’sportraitsthiswasfarfromthecase.Themixtureofethnicgroupsthatherecordedinthetitlesofhisportraitshadplayedaroleinthe1912and1913Balkanwars,aswellasWorldWarOne.Atthebeginningofthe1900sOrthodoxSlavs,CatholicandIslamicAlbanians,Turks,Jews,Roma,VlachsandothersalllivedinMacedonia,partoftheOttomanempire.AstheOttomanEmpirebrokeup,thisethnicmixallowedsurroundingnationalistgovernmentstomakeclaimstoMacedonia.Tensofthousandsofpeoplebecamerefugeesinthewarsthatfollowed.Wedonotknowwhetherthe“ArabTurks”,“LaughingTurk”,“MacedonianGirl”andotherspicturedbyBainweredisplacedornot.
