HBN has been in the business of developing interactive systems since the earliest days of the World Wide Web - even before then it was leading the way with concepts that have now
come to be embodied in e-Government initiatives. HBN with its sister company, Lambda Research and Consultancy was selected by the European Union to undertake groundbreaking research into systems for delivering public services to local communities - and led a multinational consortium in a multi-million pound project to develop the systems and implement them in a number of European countries. BT’s research centre at Martlesham was a major partner in that work. Since then, Lambda and HBN have undertaken further EU-funded projects, (projects SOCRATES, BARBARA, LAMBDA and BOURBON being the main ones) which included working with small businesses to examine how broadband networks could achieve business benefits - and helped to fuel the move to widespread use of broadband technology today. HBN’s managing director, Doug Maclean, chaired one of the key committees in the RACE programme of research in Brussels - dealing with the promotion and exploitation of broadband technology.
Today, HBN offers easy-to-use solutions for fully interactive web-sites - offering a ready made system for community web portals, local authority sites, and stand-alone sites for
both businesses and the public sector. HBN, for example, researched and developed the Scottish Executive’s national Rural Gateway portal for rural issues.
Our systems include all that is needed for a truly interactive site, and one in which management of the site can be delegated to nominated users - the sites are entirely database
driven, down to the site navigation, page content, and all other aspects of the site.
The systems include
- Database driven site structure, navigation and page content
- Full search facilities for all site content (including the content of stored documents and other files)
- Directory facility - for registers of local facilities, organisations, businesses, eating places, places to stay, etc,
again all searchable
- Simple GIS facility linked to site content, enabling directory entries, for example, to be viewed as clickable
locations on a map
- Library - for stored documents and other reference material, with full version control and content management
- Diary of events, again fully searchable, linkable to the GIS to show what’s on by location
- Booking facilities - for eating places, places to stay etc
- Shopping cart - for inclusion in any of the directory entry pages, to provide an an-line shopping facility for
businesses
- Full user administration and management - with range of security levels - to allow control over who can update or
amend site content
